CONSTRUCTION of the $800 million Northern Gas Pipeline is on track following the arrival of the first pipes, according to Jemena’s project director.

The NGP will connect Tennant Creek to Mt Isa in Queensland. The first gas is expected to flow in 2018. The project is partly underwritten by the excess gas of PowerWater, and is expected to create 900 jobs.

Jonathan Spink told NT Business Review this week’s arrival of 160km of pipe from overseas was within project timelines. The material will now be transported to Tennant Creek, where it will be stockpiled. Another three shipments will complete the 622km of pipe.

“At this stage, we are planning to commence construction next year as planned,” Mr Spink said. “This will be subject to all necessary environmental approvals and land access being granted. It will also depend on the extent of the wet season.

“This pipe will now be shipped to Tennant Creek by rail where we will store it until we are ready to build.”

The Petroleum Club NT (PCNT) has been instrumental in anticipating the LNG sector’s needs and getting these training courses organised and delivered.

Darwin is the next great growth opportunity for service companies keen to participate in Australia’s LNG growth spurt. But what are the opportunities, and how are they different from the experience in Gladstone?

 If you’re not familiar with the developments in the far north, Darwin is turning into quite the hydrocarbon center. It is already home to the Darwin LNG project, a facility completed in 2006. Rising from the southern shore is themassive Ichthys project operated by Inpex, the Japanese oil and gas exploration champion. Shell will use Darwin as home to the shorebase operations for the new Prelude floating LNG vessel. Jemena, an energy company largely owned by China’s massive State Grid Corporation, has been awarded a project to build the creatively named Northern Gas Pipeline (or NGP), a new pipe from Tennant Creek in the NT to Mount Isa in Queensland. Finally, the territory government has announced their interest in applying new gas to liquids technology to augment the territory’s diesel supplies with a home brewed alternative.

Perth, Australia - Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has won a contract to extend provision of quality assurance services into the operational phase of the INPEX-led Ichthys liquefied natural gas (LNG) Project. The 3-year agreement signifies that Intertek will continue to provide local and global inspection, expediting and auditing services to the Ichthys LNG Project throughout the remainder of construction activities and now also during operation of the facilities and pipeline.

The scope of technical quality assurance services being provided is critical to complex projects and ensures the quality of materials, on-time delivery of equipment, vendor compliance and commissioning of the facility are in accordance with construction and operating standards.

The Ichthys LNG development is one of the most significant oil and gas related projects in the world, includes offshore facilities, an onshore processing facility located in Darwin and an 890km pipeline that connects the facilities. When construction is complete, the Ichthys LNG Project will produce up to an estimated 8.9 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per annum as well as 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.
