Jemena is hiring for its Northern Gas Pipeline Project.

Jemena has been working closely with communities and businesses along the proposed route from Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory to Mount Isa in Queensland to harness as much local Indigenous and local non-Indigenous participation as possible in the construction and operation of the pipeline.

During the planning, construction, and commissioning phases, Jemena’s project will create jobs for locals and also hopes to staff ongoing operations and maintenance teams at both Tennant Creek and Mount Isa from local workforces.

It’s customary at the dawn of a new year to make predictions you have no idea will come true. So what are my predictions at the dawn of 2017 for the world of digital oil and gas? This is tricky because it requires some predictions for oil and gas too. Here goes...

Drones (or autonomous equipment) should encounter a very receptive market in the oil and gas sector. Of all the digital technologies drones will deliver superior triple bottom line benefits. Moreover, it is in many oil and gas basins’ best interests to accelerate autonomy solutions. Here’s why. 

WHY OIL AND GAS 

The oil and gas sector is actually very well suited to exploring and adopting autonomous kit. 

• The work can be dangerous – fumes and vapours from the product can asphyxiate or ignite
• The work location is frequently remote and harsh, driving up the cost of housing human operators
• Well trained human capital is now scarce because of the downsizing in the sector.
• The sector is an avid consumer of the kinds of kit that autonomous favors – heavy lifters, haulers, movers.
• The physical assets (plants, pipelines) are long life assets that require steady and often routine attention, making payback easier.
• The work has lots of routine elements (heavy haulers trundling around mines, or engineers driving around to inspect facilities).
• Environments where autonomous kit can be deployed are not shared with public use infrastructure (which takes way risks).

EnerMech has been awarded its first contract by Subsea 7 in the Australian oil and gas market.

The mechanical engineering group will perform a range of subsea flowline and umbilical pre-commissioning on the Woodside-operated North West Shelf (NWS) Project’s Persephone project and North Rankin Complex in Western Australia.

The workscope includes flooding, hydro-testing and dewatering of flow lines & well jumpers and testing all hydraulic, electrical and optical cores on the main line umbilical, EFL’s and HFL’s with work expected to start in December.

CONSTRUCTION of the $800 million Northern Gas Pipeline is on track following the arrival of the first pipes, according to Jemena’s project director.

The NGP will connect Tennant Creek to Mt Isa in Queensland. The first gas is expected to flow in 2018. The project is partly underwritten by the excess gas of PowerWater, and is expected to create 900 jobs.

Jonathan Spink told NT Business Review this week’s arrival of 160km of pipe from overseas was within project timelines. The material will now be transported to Tennant Creek, where it will be stockpiled. Another three shipments will complete the 622km of pipe.

“At this stage, we are planning to commence construction next year as planned,” Mr Spink said. “This will be subject to all necessary environmental approvals and land access being granted. It will also depend on the extent of the wet season.

“This pipe will now be shipped to Tennant Creek by rail where we will store it until we are ready to build.”
