Following the recent SME Maximiser Development program kick off - Catch Geoffrey Cann's focus on Darwin LNG opportunity...

The Petroleum Club NT (PCNT) has been instrumental in anticipating the LNG sector’s needs and getting these training courses organised and delivered.

Darwin is the next great growth opportunity for service companies keen to participate in Australia’s LNG growth spurt. But what are the opportunities, and how are they different from the experience in Gladstone?

If you’re not familiar with the developments in the far north, Darwin is turning into quite the hydrocarbon center. It is already home to the Darwin LNG project, a facility completed in 2006. Rising from the southern shore is themassive Ichthys project operated by Inpex, the Japanese oil and gas exploration champion. Shell will use Darwin as home to the shorebase operations for the new Prelude floating LNG vesselJemena, an energy company largely owned by China’s massive State Grid Corporation, has been awarded a project to build the creatively named Northern Gas Pipeline (or NGP), a new pipe from Tennant Creek in the NT to Mount Isa in Queensland. Finally, the territory government has announced their interest in applying new gas to liquids technology to augment the territory’s diesel supplies with a home brewed alternative.

SME Maximiser Development program - hot off the press:

With world-class major projects and investment opportunities for the exploration, production and refinement of conventional and unconventional oil and gas, forecasts indicate that the Northern Territory is undergoing rapid and game-changing economic growth.

Readiness is imperative as the oil and gas industry transitions into operations and maintenance phase of the Ichthys LNG project, Prelude FLNG and ongoing maintenance for Darwin LNG. Small to Medium Enterprises must also consider potential ongoing and existing capital development to come as these major projects continue to grow. Now is the time for SME’s to ensure they are well placed to identify relevant opportunities to present their capability, deliver products and services, understand client expectations and build significant long term relationships for the project lifecycle.

The program will encourage SME’s to participate in a 3 phases process:

Phase 1: Industry education and opportunity identification

Phase 2: Business analysis and strategic development

Phase 3: Face to face engagement and capability profiling event with Operators and Tier 1 Contractor teams

Perth, Australia - Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has won a contract to extend provision of quality assurance services into the operational phase of the INPEX-led Ichthys liquefied natural gas (LNG) Project. The 3-year agreement signifies that Intertek will continue to provide local and global inspection, expediting and auditing services to the Ichthys LNG Project throughout the remainder of construction activities and now also during operation of the facilities and pipeline.

The scope of technical quality assurance services being provided is critical to complex projects and ensures the quality of materials, on-time delivery of equipment, vendor compliance and commissioning of the facility are in accordance with construction and operating standards.

The Ichthys LNG development is one of the most significant oil and gas related projects in the world, includes offshore facilities, an onshore processing facility located in Darwin and an 890km pipeline that connects the facilities. When construction is complete, the Ichthys LNG Project will produce up to an estimated 8.9 million tonnes of LNG and 1.6 million tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per annum as well as 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.

Konrad Drogemuller, Intertek Regional Director of Industry Services, said “Since 2012, Intertek has been delivering local and global vendor inspection, non-destructive testing and verification support to the Ichthys LNG Project. We look forward to providing continued quality assurance support that will ensure safe and successful operations.”

As Gladstone's 3 major oil and gas projects transition into operations and maintenance phase, it's interesting to see how this change will effect the local economy and businesses in the region. I was part of a delegation last week to travel to Gladstone to understand how local industry has positioned themselves for the changes ahead and what supporting industry organisations can do to assist.

Geoffery Cann, Deloitte National Director Oil and Gas, was invited to present to the Gladstone Engineering Alliance at an event dedicated to showcasing the supply chain capabilities of the membership.

The essence of his remarks are that:

    • Australia has made a far reaching decision to support natural gas exports driven by demand from Asia.
    • The projects are moving into steady state operations
    • Our villain is the crude oil market that has taken a dramatic fall in price
    • The global LNG industry has been overturned in its wake
    • To survive and thrive, Gladstone needs to do three things. First, promote the interaction between its value chains (gas, coal, biomass, bauxite). Second, adopt technologies to help take out cost and improve productivity. Third, become factory-like in all aspects of work.
    • As only one in ten LNG projects will proceed, Gladstone has a large lead over other exporting cities and will be able to expand in the future.
To hear the podcast and gain access to slides from Geoffrey's presentation - please follow this link the article on his online blog.

Geoffrey's FUEL UP blog provides some great insights into issues facing our industry and I highly recommend subscribing for weekly updates.

We look forward to welcoming Geoffrey as a guest speak for PCNT in May following the International LNG18 Conference in to be held in Perth next month.

PCNT were invited to join the NT delegation made up of various businesses showcasing some diverse capabilities and service offerings locally.

This was a great opportunity for PCNT to build brand awareness to the greater industry and we had a lot of interest in membership, networking opportunities and our events here in Darwin.

It was also great to continue to build some internal relationships with the other representatives of local businesses in the delegation and consider ways we can work together and collaborate in the future.

Thank you to the Dept of Business for including us in this delegation and for sharing with us the opportunity to represent territory businesses.
